Analysis Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Analysis Paper - Essay Example Whereas one can easily recognize their neighbor as someone that fits invariably into their everyday life, the individual by means of stereotyping/judgment can equally judge an ââ¬Å"unknownâ⬠individual/stranger as a type of individual that they have categorized as a certain type to be avoided. Ahmed notes in her opening paragraph concerning the initial thoughts that go through the mind of the perceiver when faced with a stranger: ââ¬Å"I know you but I donââ¬â¢t want to know you quoteâ⬠(Ahmed, 21). ââ¬Å"The stranger then is not simply the one we have not encountered ââ¬â but the one we have encountered and who we have already faced (Ahmed, 21) Thus the term stranger begins to lose a great deal of its conventional meaning and begins to have a second life as a definition of a way in which humans work to compartmentalize their lives. As such, Ahmed further relates that ââ¬Å"strangersâ⬠are those individuals that do not fit into the compartmentalized realiti es that we construct around us; thus, since they do not fit, we shun and avoid them and provide them with an ââ¬Å"alienâ⬠name to denote the fact that they do not belong to our given construct. For purposes of this analysis, this author has selected the area in and around the first apartment I resided while a university student. Due to the fact that the apartment building was primarily housing for college students, the understanding of what was ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠and what was a ââ¬Å"strangerâ⬠as defined by Ahmed was quite the simple task. In this way, a type of ageism was applied to those that did not fit in and around the area. Oftentimes, what we would deem ââ¬Å"unsavoryâ⬠people would frequent the area in and around the apartment buildings in an attempt to panhandle the youths due to the fact that they invariably found their naivety an easy target to generate money. Understandably, the student-friendly housing offered student-friendly pricing and was theref ore located directly in between what could be considered a nice part of town and a very economically depressed part of town. In much the same way, Ahmed notes: ââ¬Å"To recognize means to know again, to acknowledge and to admit. How do we know the stranger again? The recognisability of strangers is determinate in the social demarcation of spaces of belonging: the stranger is ââ¬Ëknown againââ¬â¢ as something that has already contaminated such spaces as a threat to both property and personâ⬠(Ahmed, 22). It is difficult to say if this human classification of ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠is a net good or a net evil due to the fact that in many ways it works as a self defense mechanism to keep us safe from ââ¬Å"perceivedâ⬠harm; however, at the same time, it puts our ingrained biases with relation to age, gender, spatialism, and racism to the forefront of our judgment. This is an interesting dichotomy not only because it forces young students to face the realities of those le ss fortunate and develop their own defense mechanisms with respect to how they chose to interact with this foreign and unfamiliar subculture; but in that all of this was taking place during the formative college years. This dichotomy is of extreme interest due to the fact that these formative years are supposed to be very years in which young people are supposed to be the most open minded and suppliant to differing lifestyles as well as

V of Plato's Republic Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
V of Plato's Republic - Term Paper Example In the novel entitled Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, a society based on the eradication of individuality is described. All members of society are given a drug called ââ¬Å"somaâ⬠in order to live in a chemically induced euphoria as prescribed by the social leaders. Similarly, in Platoââ¬â¢s Book V of the Republic, it is intended that society eliminate the barriers imposed by family units in order for the community as a whole to contain people that are all equally affiliated with one another in order for the community to act as one organism in and of itself. As far as a communist theory goes, this is described as ideal because the overall whole of the population is then able to see itself as one equally related group of people, without one person having special interest in the well being of another person more so than they would anyone else within that society. In addition to making each person equally associated to all other persons within this society, it is pointed out by Plato that women and men are capable of performing many of the same tasks therefore somewhat eliminating gender roles and furthering the elimination of the family unit. Plato did however tend to express his thoughts that women were inferior to men in many ways including intellect, ââ¬Å" For men born and educated like our citizens, the only way, in my opinion, of arriving at a right conclusion about the possession and use of women and children is to follow the path on which we originally started, when we said that the men were to be the guardians and watchdogs of the herdâ⬠(Plato, pp. 2). This quote serves to illustrate Platoââ¬â¢s intention to expand on a womanââ¬â¢s role in his idealistic society, but yet he still places men in a leadership position above women. It can also be said that Plato examined the notion of the whole populace as a gene pool and only the best specimens out of that gene pool should reproduce thus rendering the best possible offspring. In Brave New World, there

Business accounting - Essay Example The IASBââ¬â¢s present definition of reliability is: ââ¬Å"Information has the quality of reliability when it is free from material error and bias and can be depended on by users to represent faithfully that which it either purports to represent or could reasonably be expected to representâ⬠(IASB Framework, 1989, Para. 31). The IASB Framework is meant to help not only standard setters but at the same time it assists the preparers of financial statements to apply international financial accounting standards when they deal with topics on which measures have not yet been formulated, auditors to form their views with regard to the financial statements, and users to interpret information which the financial statements contains. All the above mentioned purposes of a financial statement will be better served only if the concepts are sound, all-inclusive, and internally coherent. The qualitative characteristics are the properties that make the information furnished in financial statements helpful to users. The four key qualitative characteristics are understandability, relevance, reliability and comparability. Of the mentioned qualitative characteristics, Relevance and faithful representation are basic qualitative characteristics and Comparability, verifiability, timeliness, and understandability are ornamental qualitative characteristics (Framework 24). A crucial feature of the information furnished in financial statements is that it has to be promptly apprehensible by users. For this reason it is assumed that users have a rational knowledge of business and economic actions and accounting and a temperament to analyse the information with sensible thoroughness. But certain information with regard to complex matters, just because they are difficult to understand by users cannot be excluded. Such information is important from the view of its significance to the

International Competition Law and Practice Essay
International Competition Law and Practice - Essay Example Competition should be healthy and fair. It becomes unfair and subject to scrutiny when some firms attempt to drive their competitors out of the market. This is why there comes the need to regulate the anti-competitive behavior by companies. Competition law achieves this purpose and maintains market competition. Among the member states of the European Union, there is a set of treaties which are known as Treaties of the European Union. Among these treaties is the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union. Article 101 of this treaty prohibits the formation of cartels and other agreements that have the potential of disrupting free competition in the internal market of European Economic Area. e. ââ¬Å"make the conclusion of contracts subject to acceptance by the other parties of supplementary obligations which, by their nature or according to commercial usage, have no connection with the subject of such contracts.â⬠In the European case Carbon Gas Technologie,1 several companies joined together in an agreement under which they decided to exploit coal deposits in a much efficient manner. They agreed on using these reserves in a manner that is much less harmful to the environment. Some cases, like KSB/Goulds/Lowara/ITT,2 involve only economic elements but they are allowed as they pass a fair share of the benefits on to the consumer. But in the case of ARA, ARGEV, ARO,3 environmental benefits were not discussed under the criterion of fair share for consumers. As far as environmental benefits are concerned, preventive measures are also regarded as contributions to the protection of environment.4 In 1994, the Commission allowed an agreement between Exxon and Shell under which ethylene was no longer required to be transported between the two companies. It was because the transport of ethylene is harmful for the environment. The case of Philips ââ¬â Osram5 is another example of cases in which redu ction of negative externality is taken into

Live8 and Democratic Republic of Congo - What changed Essay
Live8 and Democratic Republic of Congo - What changed - Essay Example In the cold-war era, Africa became the battleground for super-power rivalry and many of the ills facing the continent can be traced to this period. It is only now that the developed world has woken up to the magnitude of the crisis engulfing Africa prompting the Tony Blair sponsored ââ¬ËCommission for Africaââ¬â¢ to note, ââ¬Å" African poverty and stagnation is the greatest tragedy of our time,â⬠(Commission for Africa 2005, p 13). There are some who question why the world should be so concerned about poverty and why the world community should contribute to Africaââ¬â¢s development when the same resources can be used domestically to improve the living standards of their own people. The answer is simple. Because Africa, where one child dies every second is a blot on our collective conscience. Prime Minister Tony Blair has spoken of ââ¬Å"recognising the common bond of humanityâ⬠, as has Bob Geldof, the social activist, musician and brain behind the Live8 concert, ââ¬Å"to extend the hand of sympathy and shared humanity to reach above the impenetrable roar and touch human beings on the other side (Commission for Africa 2005, p 66). To that extent the objectives of both Prime Minister Tony Blair and Live8 organiser, Bob Geldof seem to match. There is also another factor; self-interest. In the post-9/11 era it has become more and more evident that poverty spawns terrorism and that terrorism is a global phenomenon that recognises no boundaries. Black holes such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) can and are becoming sanctuaries where terrorists can hatch their plans undisturbed by weak and inefficient governments. When such countries are themselves embroiled in conflict, as in the case of the DRC, where government control does not extend to the whole of the country, the situation is even more critical. Prime Minister Tony Blair also acknowledges this fact when he says it is imperative
